What is Myofibroblastoma of the breast?

Др Мерима Горан

It is a rare benign mesenchymal tumor of the breast originating from stromal cells (myofibroblasts). It was first described by Wargotz et al. in 1987. It comprises less than 1% of all benign breast tumors. It is a spindle cell tumor.

Myofibroblastoma of the breast is a rare benign mesenchymal tumor of stromal cells, comprising less than 1% of all benign breast tumors. It is a spindle cell tumor that often expresses myogenic markers on the surface of tumor cells. It presents clinically as a solid, firm, painless, mobile, and slow-growing mass. Histologically, several variants of this tumor have been described, including classical, cellular, lipomatous, fibrous, epithelioid, myxoid, and infiltrative.

The differential diagnosis includes other benign breast lesions, most commonly fibroadenomas and hamartomas, as well as other spindle cell lesions depending on the histological variant, including lobular invasive carcinoma or metaplastic carcinoma.

How is it detected?

It appears on ultrasound as a clearly defined, homogenous, hypoechoic mass. Since there are no specific imaging features indicating the presence of this tumor, an accurate diagnosis is made histologically, through biopsy or after surgical excision.

How is it treated?

The treatment of choice is surgical excision of the tumor. If the tumor is completely removed, there is no recurrence.
