Radiotherapy is carried out on linear electron accelerator (LINAC) devices, which emit x-rays and high-energy electron beams.

The devices are placed in special radiotherapy bunkers. These are specially designed and built rooms that have massive protective walls. The radiation source is far from the patient. Beams from the radiation source pass through the skin and are directed at the tumor tissue or the site where the tumor was. The number of radiation fields depends on the very characteristics, localization and volume of the tumor, as well as the relationship with the surrounding healthy tissue.

Depending on the therapeutic plan, the number of radiation fractions in the treatment can be from one to five per week, while there is a break on weekends. This break in radiation enables the recovery of healthy cells, which are normally more resistant than diseased – tumor cells.

During the treatment, which lasts a short time, usually a few minutes, the patient should breathe normally and must not move, due to the precision of the radiation application. The process itself is completely painless and the patient usually does not feel anything during the treatment. Sometimes it is possible to have a feeling of warmth in the region of radiation on the skin.
